Apartments in Chiang Mai are numerous; the market is practically flooded with them. Many have been beautifully decorated, even if the style is a little outdated. Chiang Mai is considered one of the most pleasant places to live in Thailand and with the foreign influx this has meant a significant effect on the prices. However as the city is not really considered a desirable location for vacation homes it lacks the robust demand seen on Phuket and Samui keeping prices relatively stable.
Many of the houses in Chiang Mai are built for Thai tastes, but there are those built with foreigners preferences in mind. As the city limits have expanded in recent years Chiang Mai has become very accessible with the development of a good network of highways, don’t be afraid to consider the remoter suburbs which are often quieter. Even the most remote of the house projects are now no more than 20 minutes drive from Chiang Mai city centre. The popular housing projects are setting the current trend for the modern prosperous class, they are very orderly and secure with less noise, but tend to be densely packed.
However Chiang Mai is still, in essence, a provincial town full of traditional folk. If you choose to live among Thai suburban village expect early morning wake up announcements from the headman, and/or late night karaoke.
