Although this fruit is not native to Thailand it is now grown widely in northern Thailand, where the climate on the higher altitudes in the northern part of the country is most suited to producing crops , similar in taste and texture to those produced in the west. This fruit was initially introduced by King Bhumiphol to the hill tribes as a substitute crop for the opium poppy.,
